At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. They use the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments to study the basic constituents of matter, the fundamental particles. The particles are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives the physicists clues about how the particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature.
Accelerator Physicist Job Description
Accelerator Physicist in the Beams Department (BE), Accelerator and Beam Physics Group (ABP), Lepton Accelerators and Test Facilities Section (LAT).
Functions
As Accelerator Physicist in the LAT Section, you will set-up and improve the performances of the electron beam cooling of circulating hadron beams in the CERN accelerator complex (in particular in LEIR, AD and ELENA).
Specific tasks will include:
- Development and validation of particle beam simulation codes to accurately model the ion cooling process.
- Study the impact of the cooling on beam parameters by analytical models and simulations.
- Conception and execution of beam measurements to corroborate such modelling and improve it.
After a period of familiarization you will:
- Contribute to the improvement of the performance of the cooling systems of LEIR, AD, ELENA and the performance of these accelerators in general.
Accelerator Physicist Job Requirements

Master's degree, preferably PhD, in the field of physics or engineering, or equivalent.
Experience and competencies
The experience required for this post is:
- Demonstrated experience of work in a scientific environment preferably in the design and/or operation of particle accelerators.
- Experience in accelerator physics with demonstrated ability to compute beam optics; experience with beam optics and multi-particle simulation codes (e.g. MADX)
- Experience of experimental techniques and analysis of data from beam measurements.
The technical competencies required for this post are:
- Knowledge of accelerator physics theory.
- Accelerator performance analysis & optimization.
- Beam dynamics simulation.
- Knowledge of electron beam dynamics, charged particle interactions and beam cooling.
The language competencies required are:
