At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. They use the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments to study the basic constituents of matter, the fundamental particles. The particles are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives the physicists clues about how the particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature.
Fast Digital and RF Electronics Designer Job Description
Functions:
As a Fast Digital and RF Electronics Designer in the RF Feedbacks and Beam Control section (FB) you will design electronic modules for the control and acceleration of the proton and ion beams in the CERN accelerator complex. These modules contain High Performance Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA) for fast Signal Processing (implementing the field regulation and beam control algorithms), for data logging and interfacing with the control system.
This digital part is preceded by an RF front-end demodulation stage (bringing the RF signals - 100 to 1000 MHz range - to an IF signal that can be sampled), and followed by DAC and a modulation stage generating an RF signal for the power amplifier. You will then integrate your design in the RF system, and commission it on the machine. You will also help with the operation of existing RF electronics.
In particular, you will:
- Design mixed signals electronic modules containing a large digital processing part and an RF front-end interface.
- Develop firmware to implement signal processing in FPGAs.
- Develop software scripts with Matlab or Python for hardware test and setting-up.
- Test prototypes first on a test set-up, then in the machine environment with beam and produce test reports.
- Coordinate the series production, collaborating closely with colleagues in order to integrate these circuits into the overall system.
- Produce and manage the associated technical documentation.
- Participate in the operation, upgrade and maintenance of the beam control system of existing machines including the participation in an on call service and interventions during weekends, nights and public holidays. With the years this RF operation function will take more of your time.
