At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. They use the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments to study the basic constituents of matter, the fundamental particles. The particles are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives the physicists clues about how the particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature.
Electronics Engineer Job Description
Functions
As an Electronics engineer in the Microelectronics section of the ESE group, you will work on developing Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) for the Pixel Strip sensors readout for the CMS outer tracker detector upgrades for the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC). In particular, your work will require:
- The development of a pixel sensor readout ASIC for the Pixel-Strip modules (PS-modules) of the CMS Outer Tracker detector; namely the MPA ASIC.
- The implementation on silicon of the MPA ASIC using a 65nm CMOS technology using a digital-on-top design methodology.
- Study the radiation effects of the selected technology and employ radiation tolerant design techniques to mitigate the performance degradation effects due to radiation up to the levels required for operation of the Outer Tracker at HL-LHC.
- Employ low power digital design techniques and make system architectural choices to meet the strict requirements in power consumption.
- Work with the physicist teams to deduce comprehensive ASIC design specifications and perform verifications using physics simulation events through out the various design phases.
- Collaboration with the other team members working on the analog front-end circuitry and other design IP-blocks.
- Use of advanced EDA tools in microelectronic design for digital and mixed-signal simulations, design implementation (Place & Route design flow), functional verifications, physical verifications, etc.
- Silicon prototyping submissions.
- Preparation of test benches for the prototypes to perform functional tests and performance characterizations in tests beams as well as radiation tolerance evaluations for Total Ionizing Dose (TID) and Single Event Upset (SEU) effects.
- Work with the system level design team to assure compatibility of the MPA ASIC at the system level.
