The Department of Aerospace Science and Technology, Politecnico di Milano,
offers two one-year post-doc positions within the project
SpaceSHIP: Space Systems with Hybrid Propulsion
Multidisciplinary optimization of space systems and their trajectories
The project is funded by Lombardy Region and Fondazione Cariplo, and explores the opportunities offered by the combination of chemical and electric propulsion for space exploration, from a combined trajectory and system optimization perspective. The project stems from a concept submitted to the H2020 ERC Starting Grant in 2014, and aims to strengthening this idea for a possible, future re-submission of the proposal.
The research activity is framed into the project SpaceSHIP: Space Systems with Hybrid Propulsion. Within this project, the candidate will be in charge of the part pertaining hybrid trajectory optimization. As the aim is not to exploit the concept of hybrid propulsion with a brute force approach, the possibility of achieving natural transport by using the simultaneous presence of two or more gravitational attractions has to be accounted for. To do that, the dynamics of n-body problems will be modeled. These models will be integrated with the hybrid propulsion model (developed in parallel) for the sake of conducting coupled system-trajectory optimization. This will be carried out by implementing algorithms for hybrid trajectory optimization, which will combine elements of high- and low-thrust trajectory optimization.
The candidate shall be in charge of:
A PhD in Aerospace Engineering is desirable.
The candidate is supposed to have a background on high- and low-thrust trajectory optimization.
The official procedure will open soon, and the starting of activities is foreseen by January 2016.The net salary (after taxes) is 23,600€ for each position.
