SpaceSHIP: Space Systems with Hybrid Propulsion
Multidisciplinary optimization of space systems and their trajectories
The project is funded by Lombardy Region and Fondazione Cariplo, and explores the opportunities offered by the combination of chemical and electric propulsion for space exploration, from a combined trajectory and system optimization perspective. The project stems from a concept submitted to the H2020 ERC Starting Grant in 2014, and aims to strengthening this idea for a possible, future re-submission of the proposal.
Position 1 - Modeling of hybrid space system
The research activity is framed into the project SpaceSHIP: Space Systems with Hybrid Propulsion. Within this project, the candidate will be in charge of the modeling of both the chemical and electric propulsion parts, as well as of the electrical subsystem, for the sake of their integration into the “hybrid spacecraft” model. The latter will be interfaced with a a more general simulation framework, where couple system-trajectory optimization will be conducted. The chemical and electric propulsion models will be combined to define the hybrid propulsion model, where the issues related to hybridization have to be dealt with. The candidate is supposed to have a background on space propulsion; a specialization on low-thrust propulsion is preferable.
The candidate shall be in charge of:
A PhD in Aerospace Engineering is derirable.
