Engine Dynamometer Test Engineer Job Description

To operate as a technical expert for engine testing within EMS Facilities section; also to offer support/expertise for vehicle testing, especially relating to test equipment and data acquisition (excluding CDM emissions testing).
To take responsibility for provision of “best practice” test methods and processes, including suitable equipment, data collection, and data processing. This will be particularly focused on engine testing using engine dynamometers. The target in doing this is to provide or create “expert” experimental capability in Facilities section – currently systems engineers are doing too much of this work. The test engineer will provide process development and improvement where needed, in order to develop Facilities capability, and improve quality of output (e.g. more accurate data, reduced testing time, automated data gathering, new test methodologies, improved instrumentation).
They will also take responsibility for certain areas of Facilities operation which are directly related to test process and quality – e.g. control of test equipment including calibration & records, resolution of test issues and problems.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Personnel: no direct supervisory responsibilities, but able to work on own initiative and with others in teams, leading technical topics and providing a project lead for Facilities staff to ensure completion of projects as needed;
  • Resources: efficient use of available resources (test equipment and technicians) to progress work successfully, and complete testing projects/programmes to required timing and quality targets;
  • Planning: making proposals and creating plans to deliver short/medium term plans for test work in conjunction with development engineers. Provide input (esp. technical lead) to longer term plans for process & testing development within Facilities, including recommendation for new equipment as & when needed;
  • Decisions: make sound technical decisions, in conjunction with other staff as appropriate, to develop and deliver test work to required timing and quality targets, including equipment calibration and control. Make suggestions and recommendations for new methods and processes based on own knowledge, and customer requirements.

Engine Dynamometer Test Engineer Job Requirements

  • Honours Degree in suitable Engineering or Science subject (Mechanical or Automotive Eng.), minimum 2:1 level;
  • Alternatively, HND or equivalent may be considered for an exceptional candidate;

  • Use of EMS interface and logging software such as ETAS INCA;
  • Use of Matlab/Simulink;
  • In depth knowledge of engine testing for an automotive development environment (gasoline or diesel applications), including instrumentation and test equipment. Knowledge of engine dynamometer and testing methods is essential, plus fundamentals of engine operation such as torque, efficiency, and thermodynamics;
  • Detailed knowledge of engine management system and software (calibration) in an automotive development environment is also required;
  • Experience of new process/method development, and problem solving/issue resolution;
  • Technically innovative – able to develop new process ideas from concept to implementation;
  • Proactive & solution oriented;
  • Able to understand and support the DENSO culture and way of working: needs to be open minded, flexible, willing to adapt, and quality minded;
  • Able to work under pressure;
  • Team player;
