This is an opportunity for an experienced engineer to work in the domain of the ESA Mission Analysis Section. The position is based in ESOC, in Darmstadt with a start from 01.09.2017.

‘Mission analysis’ is the analysis of satellite orbits to determine how best to achieve the objectives of a space mission. This is performed during the entire definition, development and preparation phases of each project. The primary areas of responsibility for this position are for Near Earth Missions but the service provider may be requested to assume the responsibility and perform activities for other missions’ types.
Responsibilities/Duties
• Trajectory design, including selection of operational orbit, orbit maintenance strategy, lifetime analysis, end-of-life disposal, transfer orbit design, launcher injection orbit selection and performance analysis, launch window analysis, and deterministic Delta-V
• Navigation analysis, including orbit determination and correction strategy, accuracy analysis and stochastic Delta-V
• Product generation including Delta-V budget, ground station coverage, communication angles, and distances, eclipses, science merit
• Mission Analysis tools development and maintenance, including generic tools, mission specific tools, and common Mission Analysis and Flight Dynamics tools
• Project support, including interfacing with project, industrial team, operations and Flight Dynamics team, participation in project reviews, contribution to system trade-offs, consultancy to project
• Support to CDF studies
• Participation in critical Flight Dynamics operations
Qualifications/Experience
• Completed university degree in mathematics, physics, astronomy or equivalent with high grades
• Fluency in English, both in speech and writing
Essential Skills
• Mission Analysis, celestial mechanics, and related data processing
• Solutions development for technical (mathematical and dynamical) problems in cooperation with customers and other experts
• Good communication and presentation skills
• Shell scripting languages, Python, Fortran, C++, Matlab
• Coordination and interaction with other service providers in Mission Analysis and other fields
• Ability to work independently
Desirable Skills
• Familiarity with the ESOC environment
• Familiarity/experience with Mission Analysis engineering tasks, the PC/Linux environment, network services and protocols and system administration
• Ability to multi-task efficiently; working on multiple activities; multiple missions simultaneously
