Responsibilities/Duties
The candidate in this position will perform typical system engineering activities in the lifecycle of a system, such as:
Design – defining the conceptual build and configuration which results in a physical architecture, described by its complete functional, physical and software characteristics;
Technical analyses - which are performed for the purpose of resolving requirements conflicts, assessing system effectiveness and justification of the proposed conceptual and physical designs with consideration to the suitability of COTS and reuse of operational components developed in the context of EUMETSAT ground segments;
Technical trade-offs - for assessing dependability, effectiveness, risks, efforts and planning;
Planning and preparation for integration and verification, with the final objective to demonstrate that the deliverables conform to the specified requirements.
Specifically for ground segment phase C and D, the candidate shall provide support in the following areas:
Refinement, management and maintenance of the GS system requirements, ensuring correct flow-down and implementation during the element level developments;
Ground Segment detailed design addressing the overall design of the ground segment system and its physical elements, including the GS deployment views, and generation of the associated architectural design documentation;
Completion of the detailed design of GS components, including analyses (architectural trade-offs, system technical budgets, risk analyses) to ensure completeness and coherence of the design for all aspects related to system engineering;
Definition and refinement of GS external interfaces, and internal interfaces between the different GS elements, and their documentation in ICDs;
Refinement and maintenance of the ground segment model;
Preparation of the documentation for the GS Critical Design Review (CDR) and the review itself, as part of the ground segment project team, i.e., providing answers to and supporting the resolution of issues raised.
Development processes of the elements of the GS, both internal developments at EUMETSAT and externally procured elements, ensuring that those developments are fully compatible with the overall ground segment systems;
Studies (internal or external) and the evaluation of their results, and related engineering proposals for the ground segment detailed design;
Analyses of element-level deliverables for conformance to existing requirements and specified test procedures, which involves following up all element level development and testing activities and status;
Installation of ground segment elements at sites, and their integration into the overall Ground Segment system;
Verification and validation (IV&V) of the Ground Segment;
Preparation of, and participation in, project reviews and other check points at system, ground segment system and element level;
Preparation and maintenance of schedule, resource allocations and work breakdown structures for the GS system engineering activities.

Experience in system engineering practices and processes, especially in the field of space systems engineering, including knowledge of ECSS standards and system life cycle processes;
Experience in model-based system engineering, including the use of modelling and design tools in support of design activities;
Experience in performing technical budgets, trade-offs and analyses;
Extensive experience in the specification, design, implementation, integration, and verification of large and complex Earth Observation ground segments;
Experience in the preparation of ground segment documentation relating to requirements, design, and interfaces engineering;
