At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. They use the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments to study the basic constituents of matter, the fundamental particles. The particles are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives the physicists clues about how the particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature.
Introduction:
Senior Technician in the Experimental Physics Department (EP), ALICE Management and Engineering Support team (AIO).
ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment), one of the four large experiments of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, is a general-purpose heavy-ion detector designed to study the physics of strongly interacting matter using nucleus-nucleus, proton-nucleus and proton-proton collisions.
While the original scientific programme will be completed with the current experimental set-up in 2018, ALICE is developing a major upgrade of its detectors to cover its future scientific programme planned for the next decade. The Technical Coordination and Engineering team of the ALICE experiment is responsible for the preparation, installation and commissioning of this detector upgrade project which will be installed in the second long LHC shutdown in 2019-2020.
