Spacecraft Operations Engineer for Sentinels Job Description

This is a job for an experienced Spacecraft Operations Engineer. This role is covering an Earth Observation Spacecraft Operations Engineering service support request, initially assigned to JCS/Sentinel-6 and Sentinel-3 missions, with the possibility to be extended to supporting other Earth Observation missions.

The primary area of responsibility for this service is Spacecraft Operations engineer, in the areas of System Engineering (including Platform and FDIR) and Instruments (altimetry, optical) in support to the Earth Observation missions, as a member of the Flight Control Teams (FCT), to participate in the pre-operational phases, including special operations (i.e. LEOP, Commissioning, de-orbiting..) and in testing campaigns (Simulations, SVT, in-flight tests).
 
This position is based directly on customer site in ESOC, Darmstadt, Germany and it is full-time and permanent. Deadline for submission is 22.08.2016 and expected start for this position is middle of September 2016.

Responsibilities/Duties

The SOE position includes the following responsibilities:

  • Support the SOM in the definition of requirements and in the validation, test and operation of the MCS, including the Mission Planning System.
  • Support the SOM in the definition of requirements and in the validation, test and operation of the Simulator
  • Support the SOM in the definition of requirements FOP in the volumes indicated by the SOM
  • Support the SOM in FOS procurement, integration and tests
  • Review of satellite documents
  • LEOP and Commissioning operations support as required

The Service Provider is required to familiarise him/herself with the missions he/she is supporting and in particular with the procedures and tools that are needed to perform the Sentinel operations.
 
The tasks to be performed require considerable initiative, flexibility and independence in executing the assigned tasks.

Spacecraft Operations Engineer for Sentinels Job Requirements

Qualifications/Experience

A relevant University degree or higher qualification together with experience in spacecraft operations
 
Essential Skills

  • Spacecraft Flight Operations knowledge, including FDIR, in particular for the instruments (Altimetry, Optical) and overall view of the Spacecraft systems engineering
  • Experience with Packet Utilisation Standard
  • Experience in working in an operational environment
  • Experience with flight procedures life cycle, including validation
  • Experience with anomaly investigations
  • Ability to understand and accurately predict behavior of complex systems
  • Experience with low Earth orbit satellites operations, including experience in preparatory phase (OPSPREP), special operations (LEOP, De-orbiting campaign) and pre-operational phase (“Commissioning”) specially within the Sentinels missions
  • Ability to work independently and with little supervision
  • Well-organized, able to priorities and manage several activities in parallel
  • Capable of coordinate and interact with other service providers in operations and other fields.
  • Fluency in English, both in speech and writing
  • Familiarity with operational simulators, ideally SimSat
  • Familiarity with satellite control systems, ideally SCOS2000
  • Familiarity with Earth Observations missions, in particular with Copernicus Sentinels
  • Familiarity with TM/TC databases, preferably SCOS2000 compatible
  • Familiarity with multi-satellite missions
  • Experience in ground tests preparation and execution, e.g. SVTs
    Familiarity with spacecraft On Board Software design
