RiSE - Roche internship for Scientific Exchange - in Molecular Pharmacology & Biomarker Section, Ophthalmology - Emerging Technologies for Molecular Imaging of the Retina

The Ophthalmology Discovery and Biomarker Area located in Basel, Switzerland oversees the discovery, research and development of novel treatments for Age-related Macular Degeneration, Diabetic Retinopathy, Diabetic Macular Edema and Glaucoma, which are all among the leading causes of blindness. The RiSE program (Roche Internships for Scientific Exchange) offers the most talented postgraduate students the opportunity to enhance their competencies and to gain valuable work experience with us.

One such approach harnesses retinal molecular imaging using instrumentation such as scanning laser ophthalmoscopy (SLO) and optical coherence tomography (OCT) to visualize cellular and molecular mediators of disease in animal models. The RiSE intern will play a major role in developing these technologies in order to facilitate early disease detection, monitoring of disease progression, and assessment of therapeutic response in animal models and patients. 

During the internship your tasks will include:

• Working with a team of chemists, engineers, and biologists to develop novel retinal optical molecular imaging agents.
• Evaluating imaging agent sensitivity, specificity, and toxicity using established in vitro and in vivo models of retinal diseases.
• Analyzing and reporting experimental results through publications and presentations, as well as exchanging information with external collaborators

• Enrolled in PhD or MD program at a university
• Strong experience in bioconjugate chemistry and in vivo optical imaging using peptides, antibodies, optical imaging dyes
• Familiarity with OCT and fundus imaging instrumentation
• Solid experience in cell culture based assays used to test imaging agents, including spectrophotometry, flow cytometry, and microscopy
• Basic knowledge or experience using ocular disease animal models
• Highly motivated to work in a team and contribute to a collaboration with academic partners and have a great interest in acquiring novel techniques and gaining scientific knowledge
• Fluent in written and oral English
