At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. They use the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments to study the basic constituents of matter, the fundamental particles. The particles are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives the physicists clues about how the particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature.
Controls Automation Engineer Job Description
Introduction
Controls & Automation Engineer in the Beams Department (BE), Industrial Controls and Safety Systems Group (ICS), Process Control Systems (PCS) section.
You will join:
- The Beams (BE) Department, which is responsible for beam performance over the complete CERN accelerator chain, from the source to the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), and which carries out Research and Development (R&D) activities on the upgrade of the LHC, its injectors and on future accelerators.
- The Industrial Controls and Safety Systems (ICS) Group which develops solutions and provides support for large and medium scale industrial control systems and also promotes their use. The support covers the domains of the experiments, the technical infrastructure and the accelerators.
- The Process Control section (PCS) which develops, implements and maintain protection and process control applications deployed in the CERN industrial facilities (HVAC, Cooling, Cryogenics, Gas systems¿). To optimize this task the section is actively involved in the design of an industrial control framework based on proven industrial technologies: SCADA, PLCs, IPCs. Also the section is in charge of CERN-wide services as the support of PLCs and industrial communication technologies.
Functions As a Controls & Automation Engineer in the PCS section, you will:
- Analyse, design and implement real-time software based on the CERN FESA framework. The main applications are the LHC cryogenics, inner-triplets alignment and the quench protection system (QPS).
- Analyse, design and implement safety instrumented systems based on industry standards.
- Lead, plan and manage the development of components to be employed by our CERN framework: UNICOS. This mainly involves the front-end plugins that allow automated generation of applications.
- Develop and supervise the development of process control applications.
- Apply software quality management (e.g. testing, verification) to the PLC applications developed in BE/ICS.
- Participate to the support effort to CERN users of Industrial Control Systems, in particular for PLCs and industrial communications.
- Supervise a small team of technical engineers.
