IN COMPUTATIONAL RNA BIOLOGY
The Fraunhofer IZI is coordinating the project “RIBOLUTION – integrated platform for the identification and validation of innovative RNA-based biomarkers for personalised medicine” which is a research alliance supported by the Fraunhofer Future Foundation. We aim at the identification and validation of biomarkers on the basis of the non-protein coding part of the human genome. The project focuses on diagnostic and prognostic questions of utmost relevance for patients and health economy.
We are searching for an outstanding and highly motivated PhD student to join us to take advantage of transcriptome-wide expression data from patient samples in order to achieve new insights into the regulatory mechanisms of a large class of novel transcripts. These so called long non-protein coding RNAs (lncRNAs) show a high potential for complex cis- and transregulation in the human genome. However, gene regulatory mechanisms based on lncRNAs are still barely studied and understood. We, and others, found many lncRNAs to be highly specifically expressed in different tissues and disease associated pathways, proposing that lncRNAs are functional in the context of diseases.
What we expect from you
Our group uses RNA bioinformatics and systems biological approaches in close cooperation with molecular biologists to study how long non-coding RNAs contribute to the emergence and progression of disease. The successful candidate will employ dense in-house genome data to model the regulatory mechanisms of lncRNAs in the context of disease and to formulate hypotheses, which will be experimentally tested by our collaborators. This task will also comprise the development of novel algorithms for the analysis of genomic and transcriptomic data.
