A (senior) process control engineer is concerned with identifying and specifying the required control and safeguarding of (petro) chemical plants. The main focus points in this filed of process control is how the plant is operated and what features are required for this (control), and how you can overcome hazards/risks through automation with the functions that are required (safeguarding).
In general it can be said that process control engineers deliver functional specifications and the software of the DCS and Safeguarding systems. Process control engineers work closely with process engineers to design the process. For an optimal controllability of the process they also provide a lot of input for the process design documents, such as the P&ID’s.
Process safety is an important topic within process control engineering. Process control engineers therefore often participate in safety studies (HAZOP, SIL assessment).
