The Position
Reporting to the Executive Director, and based in Nairobi, this role leads the development and implementation of the mining and extractives sector strategy and knowledge center for the Group. The successful candidate will also provide advisory services to clients across the mining and extractives supply chain, including various subsectors such as quarrying, dredging, and mining. This is a hands-on role that will require the general manager to work with the clients in devising and optimizing their strategies for automation, production planning, purchasing, materials control, logistics and quality assurance, as well as essential production output.
Key Responsibilities
· Develop a five year mining and extractives sector business plan for the group and contribute to the group’s East Africa strategy and its implementation:
- Strategy Support: Analyze the market need and develop/refine value proposition to attract new or fully engage existing clients
- Operational Support: Assess and improve middle and back office capabilities, particularly products, systems and processes in various divisions (e.g., credit department) to meet market and client needs
- Client Relationship Support: Assess and improve capabilities of front office staff who directly engage clients (e.g., relationship managers)
- Advisory Services Support: Assess and improve the provision of non-financial services, particularly those that support the growth and development of clients
· Support investment and advisory teams on specific deals (through the provision of advisory services to clients):
- Support SME clients by helping to optimize their mining/extractives and supply chain operations; analyze data, conduct diagnostics of processes and present solutions to clients leveraging techniques such as Lean production or operational excellence projects
· Develop knowledge center on best practices in the mining and extractives sector:
- Lead research agenda on mining and extractives sector, including to some extent sector reform; Author research products such as presentations and training manuals for staff or clients and reports and articles for the business community
Develop local and global business linkages between clients in the sector by establishing business relationships and facilitating deals that unlock opportunities
Education & Qualifications - Requirements
· Masters level degree in mining, mechanical and industrial engineering or related industry and 15+ years of relevant experience, client work experience in Africa or other developing markets a plus
· Demonstrated technical experience working across a broad range of mining and extractives areas e.g., drilling, fixed plants, technical aspects of electrical, logistics and human resource management
· In-depth knowledge of automation, guiding organizations through significant changes in mining and extractives operations, coaching senior management on organizational change
· Experience managing complex projects, monitoring programs, and reporting on a project cycle basis
· Excellent organizational, communications and people management skills
