Bring practical and technical petroleum knowledge to a key leadership role

AkzoNobel Functional Chemicals (FC) is a key global producer of chemicals with a portfolio including cellulosic specialties, chelates, ethylene amines, metal alkyls, micronutrients, organic peroxides, polysulfides, redispersable powder polymers, salt specialties and sulfur products. To lead a diverse team in supporting the further development and commercialization of AkzoNobel chemicals, primarly chelates, we currently seek an experienced
RD&I Team Leader - Oil Field Chelates
This is an important role to which you will bring practical oilfield and petroleum laboratory experience and knowledge into AkzoNobel’s RD&I group. In doing so, you will help us set up the processes, systems and equipment necessary to create an independent RD&I entity that is able to support the commercial business targeted at the petroleum industry. You will be joining a multinational and multicultural company that is committed to your personal and professional development. The position is located at AkzoNobel’s main RD&I center at Deventer in the Netherlands. You will travel domestically and internationally for up to 10% of the time.
Key responsibilities and deliverables
Within this context your core objective is to provide technical proof that our simulation technology is ideally suited for the petroleum industry. Thus you support the technical marketing team in field executions of stimulation jobs. You also lead the development of next generation of chelates for use in stimulation, along with our effort to develop fracturing technology within AkzoNobel’s current product slate. This requires you to formulate customer specific products, solutions and applications via the implementation and management of work streams and processes. It also requires you to co-ordinate with overall RD&I activities and to maintain and leverage strong ties and relationships with other expert groups, members and resources across our RD&I organization.
A further important aspect of the role is help to protect intellectual property by assisting with patent development. In addition, you write and review technical reports for internal and external customers, and prepare and present technical papers for industry conferences. At all times you seek to identify, build or leverage new laboratory capability as you streamline the working of the team and the laboratory facilities. This could mean building new laboratory and testing capabilities.
Candidate profile
To apply for this position you should have a Masters or higher degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or Petroleum Engineering. With this will come at least five years of work experience in a laboratory setting within the petroleum industry. Ideally you also have experience in managing or leading a team. Patenting experience is an advantage. You are proficient in Microsoft Office programs and possess the communication skills necessary to interact with all levels of our matrix organization. Above and beyond these attributes, you are a customer focused and able to drive change, leading by example and you develop and inspire your team.
You will be working in an international environment, so a high level of written and spoken English is essential.
