The Technical University of Denmark (Danish: Danmarks Tekniske Universitet), often simply referred to as DTU, is a university in Kongens Lyngby, just north of Copenhagen, Denmark. It was founded in 1829 at the initiative of Hans Christian Ørsted as Denmark's first polytechnic, and is today ranked among Europe's leading engineering institutions.
DTU, along with École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Eindhoven University of Technology and Technical University of Munich, is a member of EuroTech Universities Alliance
Centre for Ocean Life (www.OceanLifeCentre.dk) offers a number of 2-year post doctoral and 3-year PhD fellowships within the general topic of Marine Ecology. The fellows will be employed at DTU Aqua (The National Institute for Aquatic Resources, Technical University of Denmark, Charlottenlund, Denmark), or at one of the collaborating institutes or universities in the Copenhagen area. Starting times are negotiable.
The overarching goal of the Centre is to develop trait-based models of marine ecosystems. We do this through three interconnected main activities:
(i) Identification of essential traits and quantitative of the associated tradeoffs for the main life forms in the ocean (from microbes to mammals);
(ii) development of trait based models of marine populations, communities, and ecosystems;
(iii) descriptions of spatio-temporal patterns and distributions of species and ‘traits’ in marine systems.
Further information on these main activities and examples of possible projects can be found on the Centre’s homepage. We currently have a group of about 20 young researches associated the Centre (PhD and Postdocs). They are working on various aspects of marine life using diverse approaches (observational, experimental, theoretical) but collaborating through weekly science meetings, annual science retreats, numerous working groups, and collaborative projects. Their backgrounds are as diverse as are those of the Principal Investigators of the Centre, from physics and mathematics to biology and chemistry, and we spend considerable effort developing cross-disciplinary communication and projects since we believe that the potential for discovery and progress may be achieved by confronting the different disciplines. We invite applications from modellers and experimental, observational, and theoretical ecologists, and from scientists or students with relevant basic training in a natural science discipline. You can apply with your own project ideas (as long as they accord with the goal of the Centre), or you can subscribe to any of the project ideas outline on our home pages. Candidates are selected based on their qualifications and commitment.
Qualifications
We are looking for an ecologist with quantitative skills or a physicist/mathematician/engineer with a keen interest in ecology.
Postdoc position: Candidates should have a PhD degree or equivalent.
PhD position: Candidates should have a master's degree with an academic level equivalent to a master's degree in engineering.
Approval and Enrolment
The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. For information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies, please see the DTU PhD Guide.
Salary and terms of employment
The appointment terms of Postdoc fellows will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union, but an annual salary of about 80,000 USD per year (including a pension scheme) can be expected.
Candidates applying from outside Denmark may be eligible to a tax reduction upon an application.
The appointment terms of PhD fellows are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students. An annual salary of about 60,000 USD per year (including a pension scheme) can be expected.
Further information
Further information from any Principal Investigators of the Centre (see the homepage), with whom also possible projects or themes can be discussed.
