Internship: Compare bonding properties of current Cr(VI) coatings with those of new coatings Job Description

IntroductionYou are a student at a vocational or trade school, or a student at an applied university in lab work, chemistry, or a related discipline. You have some laboratory experience, and you can communicate and write in English.Job MissionASML uses all kinds of different materials in the various modules and machines. One of the tasks within the Construction materials, corrosion and bonding group is to provide reliable (material) properties of adhesives to designers to enable them to design adhesive bonds. Within the group, we have several test setups to analyze the properties of these materials. In order to get a reliable outcome of tests, they have to be repeated in a precise manner multiple times.Job DescriptionOver time, coatings and materials become available but are also discontinued, because of legislation (REACH, RoHS, etc.) or other commercial reasons. One of the surface treatments that is expected to be replaced in the near future are the Cr(VI)-based treatments. These are currently used on, for instance, bolts and inserts.
During this internship, you will focus on comparing properties of adhesives on the original Cr(VI)-based surface treatment with the new surface treatment.

    We expect you to:
    • Make a metallurgic comparison of the old and new surface treatment
    • Compare the strength of different adhesives on test parts with both coatings on different substrates
    • Combine the outcome of these tests to make a statement whether the new surface treatment is equal or better than the current surface treatment from a technical point of view, but also with regard to potential future legislation changes (e.g.within RoHS, REACH)EducationYou are a student at a vocational or trade school, or a student at an applied university in lab work, chemistry, or a related discipline. You have some experience with working in a laboratory environment. You have good communication and reporting skills. You can communicate in English, both verbally and in writing. As the results will be used for designing, it is important that you are able to work precisely according to standardized test protocols.

This is an apprentice internship for 3-5 days a week with a minimum duration of 4-6 months. The preferred starting date is September 2019.Other informationWhat ASML offers
