Vanderlande – challenges in motion
Description of the assignment:
Over the years complexity of Vanderlande’s material handling systems has increased enormously:
• From an equipment supplier, via system integrator, towards logistic solution and service provider;
• From a mechanically oriented company towards a controls and software oriented company;
• From small customer systems to major airports (Amsterdam Schiphol, London Heathrow, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Hong Kong, Los Angeles LAX), parcel hubs (UPS, TNT, DHL), and huge food retail distribution centers (Albert Heijn, Leclerc, Woolworths);
• Increased throughput on a decreased footprint: produce more with less steel in the system. Higher speeds trigger dynamical phenomena and interactions we have not seen before.
Traditional product design methodologies (large design cycles with prototypes and endless physical testing) is not viable anymore: it takes too long, is very expensive, and does not cover all scenarios that shall be explored and tested. Model Based Design is a methodology with automated workflows, in which plant behavior and controls behavior are modelled in a very early design stage.
Conflicting requirements, design errors and interface mismatches can be detected and fixed before any prototype is created. Moreover, scenarios can be tested that are impossible to perform in reality because of limited reproducility, or their destructive impact. Controls are modelled and validated/verified. Code generation ensures one-on-one implementation on the target controls platform. Automatic artifact generation (figures, documentation, manuals, experiments) with the model as starting point. Vanderlande embraces Model Based Design and makes it the standard design method for new products or components within R&D.
For each aspect of a design with many unknowns or risks, a model is created. Many small aspect models are easier to develop and maintain than one big model. Based on actual and urgent research questions, aspect models are built. One can think of capacity models (throughput), timing models, power/energy models, real-time behavior, or complex control algorithms.
