Can you help EUMETSAT to identify, develop and maintain web services that support critical data services for our users?
EUMETSAT is the European satellite agency for monitoring weather and climate. Bringing together the resources of 30 Member States, we develop and operate a range of satellite systems surveying the atmosphere, ocean and climate that deliver data 24 hours a day. Our data is vital to weather forecasts that protect lives and property and to monitoring the changing climate. We are recruiting for a Web Services Engineer to play a fundamental role in maintaining and enhancing our web-based data services. Working as part of a busy team, this role will provide you with the opportunity to apply your background in web applications and software development to make a real difference to EUMETSAT’s users.
In this role you will support the analysis of user requirements, define the design and follow up the development, implementation and maintenance of Web Services supporting business-critical data services to EUMETSAT’s user community. Your main responsibilities will include design, prototyping, following up the development and maintaining the full stack of EUMETSAT’s medium-size web services, including front-end/back-end, for web-based data services to users. You will support the maintenance and evolution of the operational data services to users by identifying and implementing evolutions in the area of web services, e.g. the Earth Observation Portal, Product Navigator and Web Map Services. This role will also give you the opportunity to procure and manage commercial support services, and to identify and manage industrial development support. In addition to preparing and managing projects, technical studies and surveys, you will also help to maintain baseline technical documentation.
Along with a university degree in a relevant discipline, e.g. web development, computing, software engineering (or equivalent) you will have knowledge and proven experience of:
· web applications development including user interface design/development, web applications back-end design/development and software engineering in general, preferably in the domain of data access
· software development and maintaining small to medium size software and/or hardware systems
· solid knowledge of web technologies such as HTTP, Restfull APIs, Javascript (JS framework, nodejs), CSS (css framework) and HTML5
· good knowledge in back-end technologies preferably around the Java or Python ecosystem as well as Linux computer operating systems
· excellent team-working skills, pro-active attitude and the ability to work autonomously with a minimum of supervision under high workloads are mandatory
· strong inter-personal skills and ability to technically lead and supervise software development projects involving external industrial partners
Experience of the following would be considered an advantage:
· Modern software development project management and life cycle
· Cloud computing architecture
· ISO/OGC Interoperability standards such as ISO 19115 metadata, OGC Observations and Measurements, OGC CSW.
