At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. They use the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments to study the basic constituents of matter, the fundamental particles. The particles are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives the physicists clues about how the particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature.
Applied Physicist Detector Gas Systems Job Description
Introduction:
Applied Physicist for detector gas systems in the Experimental Physics Department (EP), Detector Technology Group (DT), Fluidic Systems Section (FS).
You will join:
- The Experimental Physics (EP) Department which carries out basic research in the field of experimental and theoretical particle physics in a stimulating scientific atmosphere, standing as an important reference for the European physics community. It also contributes to the education and training of young scientists.
- The Detector Technologies (DT) group which participates in the development, construction and operation of particle detectors for experiments at CERN. This comprises detector consolidation and upgrade projects as well as infrastructure and services for experiments.
- The Fluidic Systems Section which is charged to design, prototype, construct, commission, operate and maintain fluidic systems (gas and cooling) for detectors in CERN experiments. It has also the mandate to perform selective R&D in areas relevant to novel detector thermal management, gas systems and for the upgrade of the existing systems in view of higher detector performances and sustainable operation.
Functions:As an Applied Physicist in the Fluidic Systems Section, you will:
- Participate in the design and construction of new gas systems for particle physics detectors, evaluating the performances required with respect to the detector operation;
- Take responsibility for the maintenance and operation (M&O) of the CERN existing gas systems (about 30), supervising the section operation team in close contact with the M&O responsible for the CO2 cooling team;
- Assume a leading role in the upgrade and operation of the gas quality monitoring system, proposing innovative solutions and operating methods in agreement with the experiments;
- Make major contributions to the R&D program of the gas team, focused on the search and validation of new environmentally friendly gas mixtures, the development of new gas systems to enhance the detector performances, the optimization of system design to guarantee the long-time operation for physics exploitation.
