At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Materials Engineer Job Description

In addition, as a Materials Engineer in the EN-MME-MM section you will:
 

• Introduce and carry out research as part of individual studies of materials, perform failure analysis of materials and components.
• Make critical assessments of metallurgical observations and various associated results, produce technical reports and advise users on problems connected with materials.
• Suggest test programs, present results in technical or scientific meetings.
• Take charge of an existing working group on metal raw materials in support to the CERN stores, representing the different needs and interests in metal raw materials in the Organization. Define in this framework the technical specifications and follow the developments in processing and manufacturing of metallic raw materials.
• Carry out mechanical tests at cryogenic and room temperatures and develop adapted test facilities for fracture mechanics tests at cryogenic temperature.

Materials Engineer Job Requirements

The experience required for this post is:

• Demonstrated working experience in materials engineering, including the field of material testing and behaviour.
• Initial work experience in a multi-purpose metallurgy and materials testing laboratory; experience in fracture mechanics testing and assessments would be an advantage.

• Destructive testing: see below for the complete list of technical competencies.
• Knowledge of materials science in general.
• Knowledge of microscopy and analytical techniques applied to materials such as optical, digital microscopy, Focused Ion Beam Scanning Electron Microscopy (FIB-SEM), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) associated with Energy Dispersive X-ray analysis (EDS) and Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD), image analysis, X-ray diffraction and spectrographic analysis.
