TNO is an independent research organisation. We believe in the joint creation of economic and social value. We focus on transitions or changes in five social themes:
Industry: from economic stagnation to growth in high-technology industry
Healthy Living: from illness and treatment to health and behaviour
Defence, Safety & Security: from a wide range of threats to controllable risks
Urbanisation: from urbanisation bottlenecks to urban vitality
Energy: from conventional sources to sustainable energy systems.
Innovation with purpose is what TNO stands for. We develop knowledge not for its own sake, but for practical application.
OUR MISSION
TNO connects people and knowledge to create innovations that boost the competitive strength of industry and the well-being of society in a sustainable way.
OUR STRATEGY
Every four years, in close collaboration with our stakeholders, we draw up a strategic plan that describes how we will pursue our mission. This plan is our proposal to society. Our strategy is a reflection of the trends we observe in society and technology. In close coordination with our stakeholders we have defined five transitions on which we will focus. These are in line with the challenges and ambitions of the Top Sector policy and social themes in the Netherlands and the rest of Europe.
Our customer is one of the largest independent organization in Europe in the area of new technology development and technical advisory. They employ over 3000 engineers and researchers in a wide range of economic sectors, including energy, mobility, industrial innovation, information society and defense.
At their Optics research group they provide world-class technical solutions for their customers in a broad range of areas. Traditionally they work for customers in the fields of Space and Semiconductors, but with the emergence of photonics the playing field has expanded and they are leading innovations into the world of Oil and Gas as well as medical instrumentation.

We’d like you to take responsibility and ownership over results and need you to push the boundaries of what is possible: if the existing approach is no longer sufficient, you will proactively take charge in order to maintain course.
For this, you have a pioneering spirit and are comfortable with the uncertainty that usually comes with complex scientific and engineering problems.
Your seniority will also show in the guidance given to our less senior colleagues and we expect you to delegate and monitor optical design tasks to them.
The role of Senior Optical Designer requires you to have a certain level of expertise that you’re willing to share without hesitation.
To be successful in the role ideally we’d like you to have;
