Responsibilities
Offshore pipelines are manufactured using multi-pass welding processes, such as submerged arc welding (SAW) or gas metal arc welding (GMAW). The fracture toughness (the ability of a material containing a flaw to resist further fracture) of a medium/high strength steel weld at the fusion line location is heavily affected, and most likely degraded, due to the thermal cycles introduced by the welding passes.
The main goal of this assignment is to design an assessment method able to predict the lifetime and point of failure of critical welds. The research comprises both experimental and numerical analysis of the fracture toughness degradation at weld fusion line and heat-affected zone.
Requirements
We are looking for a student with an affinity for the correlation between theoretical models and real-world applications. In the course of this project you will develop both your engineering and your scientific skill set.
