Principal Electronics Engineer Job Description
The Principal Electronics Engineer will work within the Systems Engineering Team reporting to the Director of Manufacturing (Instrument and Console). The role will have line management responsibilities for an electronics technician.
Purpose of the position
The Principal Electronic Engineer will lead the design and development of microprocessor-based electronic hardware for the Instrument platform incorporating Printed Circuit Board Assemblies (PCBAs), FPGAs, single board computer, cabling and electronic sensors and motor actuators / drives.
Tasks/Outcome domains
- Leading the electronics feasibility, design and verification activities within the new product development process potentially working alongside outsourced development partners as required.
- Liaising with PCBA suppliers in the industrialisation of PCBAs including development of PCB inspection, test equipment and manufacturing processes.
- Working with outsourced board layout teams for the production of the PCBA, ensuring good design principles are followed.
- Overseeing safety and regulatory compliance testing in conjunction with the QA/RA team.
- Establishing design input criteria including system and sub-system specifications, boundary interface requirement, error budgets and system level risk analysis.
- Performing and / or overseeing electronic engineering design analysis including but not limited to component tolerance analysis, FMEA risk analysis, finite element thermal analysis, component reliability, when appropriate using modelling and simulation tools.
- Creation and / or approval of electronic design output documentation including BoMs, eCAD files and components libraries, Gerber and PCBA manufacturing drawings.
- Creation and / or approval of design documentation such as engineering change orders, design specifications, verification plans and risk analysis for the Design History File.
- Supporting the life-cycle management of released product including:
- Addressing component obsolescence and shortages;
- Cost down initiatives;
- Qualification of parts from new or alternative suppliers;
- Root cause analysis and design changes arising from customer feedback, reliability or technical issues arising as agreed with the senior management team;
- Updating of the DHF for any released Instrument changes as agreed with the QA / RA team.
- Line management of the electronics engineering team.
Principal Electronics Engineer Job Requirements

A Degree in Electronic Engineering or an equivalent technical discipline.

At least seven years’ experience working within a new product development environment in a regulated environment.

Ideally experienced in the design and development of medical devices or in-vitro diagnostic equipment working within an ISO13485 / GMP compliant environment.

Experience of working with complex, multilayer PCBAs incorporating microprocessors, FPGAs, sensors, PWM motor and actuator drives, and optical fluorimeters, or Ethernet based communications.

Advanced knowledge, orally in writing of Dutch and English

MS Office, data analysis / statistical analysis packages, Mentor Graphics E-CAD design software, MATLAB Modelling software or LAB View / National Instruments software.
