At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. They use the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments to study the basic constituents of matter, the fundamental particles. The particles are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives the physicists clues about how the particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature.
Accelerator physicist Job Description
Functions
As a member of the Hadron Synchrotrons Single particle effects (HSS) section of the ABP group, you will participate in the activities related with single particle beam dynamics studies for the LHC injectors, with particular focus on the PS ring ( https://home.cern/about/accelerators/proton-synchrotron ), both in its current status and for the on-going upgrade studies. In collaboration with the members of the Hadron Synchrotrons Incoherent effects (HSI) section, you will also contribute to studies involving single-beam lifetime limitations in the PS, with an emphasis to space-charge effects for high-intensity and high-brightness beams.
You will:
- Develop and maintain an effective model that includes linear and non-linear beam dynamics effects.
After a period of familiarisation you will:
- Contribute to the studies to improve the performance of the current machine, including single-particle beam dynamics coupled with incoherent effects.
- Contribute to the operational improvement of the current machine, possibly also in the role of machine supervisor.
- Contribute to the beam commissioning efforts needed after the implementation of the changes related with the upgrade programme.
Qualification required
Master's degree in the field of physics or engineering, or equivalent.
The experience required for this position is:
- PhD in the field of physics or engineering (or equivalent) with a first relevant experience in a scientific environment preferably in the design and/or operation of particle accelerators or Masters degree in the field of physics or engineering with extensive experience in a scientific environment preferably in the design and/or operation of particle accelerators.
- Experience of accelerator physics, with demonstrated ability to compute beam optics.
- Experience with single-particle beam dynamics simulation codes.
- ...
The technical competencies required for this post are:
- Knowledge of accelerator physics theory.
- Knowledge of transverse single-particle dynamics.
- Knowledge of beam optics (rings and transfer lines).
- Beam dynamics simulation: knowledge of massive numerical simulation techniques.
- Accelerator performance analysis & optimization.
