Mechanical engineer Job Description
As mechanical engineer, with the support of technicians and designers as part of the Technical Coordination team, you will ensure the successful integration of collaboration-supplied sub-detectors into a complex large-scale HEP experiment.
In particular you will:
- Be integrated in the ALICE Technical Coordination team to work with all stakeholders - detector experts, members of the collaboration and technical support teams from CERN and collaborating institutes.
- Integrate upgrade detector components into ALICE.
- Design, analyse and fabricate precision support systems as well as installation tools for the beampipe and the central tracking detectors.
- Design strategies for precision survey and alignment of the central detector components.
- Define and supervise installation procedures for the detector upgrades and conduct the work package analysis meetings that assess the safety aspects of the installation with all the stakeholders.
- Plan and supervise the installation of services for the upgrade detectors and infrastructures.
- Support the Technical Coordination team in supervising the designers and technicians during the daily work.
- Participate to the standard maintenance periods during the year end technical stops.
- Actively participate in Engineering Design Reviews and Production Readiness Reviews of the upgrade detectors.

Qualification required
Master's degree in the field of mechanical engineering, preferably with a specialisation in mechanical design, or equivalent.
Experience and competencies
The experience required for this post is:
- Expertise in the integration and installation work of mechanical systems.
- Expertise in management and supervision of a team.
- Proven expertise in relations and technical coordination of external companies and contractors.
- Expertise in the use of ANSYS, CATIA and office software work packages (Microsoft Office).
The technical competencies required for this post are:
- Organisation, planning and control: coordination of activities involving different technical fields (mechanical work, metallic structures, heavy handling etc.).
- Contract management.
- Mechanical calculations.
- Computer-Aided Design and Drafting
The behavioural competencies required for this post are:
- Managing self: working well autonomously; taking on activities and tasks without prompting.
- Demonstrating flexibility: readily accepting new tasks or work/projects; Adapting quickly and resourcefully to shifting priorities and requirements.

The language competencies required are:
- English or French: spoken and written, with the ability to draw-up technical specifications and/or scientific reports, and/or to make oral presentations. The ability to understand and speak the other language in professional contexts would be an advantage.

Note on Employment Conditions
We offer a limited-duration contract for a period of 3 years. Limited-duration contracts shall terminate by default on their date of expiry. Subject to certain conditions, holders of limited-duration contracts may apply for an indefinite position.
These functions require:
- Work in radiation areas.
- Interventions in underground installations.
- A valid driving licence.
- Shift work, when required by the needs of the Organization.
- Stand-by duty, when required by the needs of the Organization.
- Work during nights, Sundays and official holidays, when required by the needs of the Organization.
