At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. They use the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments to study the basic constituents of matter, the fundamental particles. The particles are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives the physicists clues about how the particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature.
Electro-mechanical Technical Engineer Job Description
Functions
As Mechanical or Electro-mechanical technical engineer in the MDT Section, you will join a team of scientists and technicians at CERN, and work on the design, development, prototyping and characterization of superconducting magnets, and the analysis of the operational performance of superconducting magnets.
You will:
- Oversee and participate in the construction of short models and prototypes of HL-LHC, as well as other superconducting technology and R&D magnets.
- Play an active role and take initiative in the development of magnet construction technology, seeking solutions to the challenges associated with the use of new materials (Nb3Sn, HTS), fabrication procedures (coil winding, high-temperature heat treatment, impregnation).
- Play an active role in the quality control of the model magnet construction.
- Play an active role and take responsibility in the maintenance, consolidation and upgrading of tooling for magnet construction, tests and simulations, programmable controller usage.
The activity requires interacting with different teams and services at CERN and service contractors, as well as external laboratories and industry.
Qualification required Bachelor's degree in the field of Mechanical or Electro-mechanical Engineering, or equivalent.*
*Please note that preference will be given to candidates with the above-mentioned qualifications: In principle consideration will not be given to applications from people with higher qualifications.
Note on Employment Conditions We offer a limited-duration contract for a period of 5 years. Limited-duration contracts shall terminate by default on their date of expiry.
