Electrical Engineer or Applied Physicist Job in Geneva, , Switzerland

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. They use the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments to study the basic constituents of matter, the fundamental particles. The particles are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives the physicists clues about how the particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature.

Electrical Engineer or Applied Physicist Job Description

    Introduction

As an electrical engineer or applied physicist, you will be part of CERN's Technology Department (TE), which is responsible for technologies specific to existing particle accelerators, facilities and future projects. You will join the Magnet, Superconductors and Cryostat Group, which is responsible for the magnets of the beam lines of the entire CERN accelerator complex, and in particular the Magnetic Measurement Section (TE-MSC-MM) whose mandate covers the magnetic characterization of devices, materials and environments.

    Functions

As part of the Magnetic Measurement team, you will take on a dual role:

As a test station project leader: you will specify, execute, supervise and analyse acceptance and characterization tests of the field strength, alignment and quality of prototype and series magnets for strategic upcoming CERN and external collaboration projects, including the magnetic characterization of magnetic materials. You will work in close collaboration with magnet designers, manufacturers and beam physics specialists both at CERN and on our partners' premises. You will:

    • Take charge of the instrumentation developments needed for upcoming projects of strategic importance to CERN such as the high-luminosity LHC upgrade, the upgrade of the LHC injector chain, ISOLDE HIE Phase 2 and the new ELENA ring.
    • Organise, carry out and supervise test campaigns. Analyse the results in view of a coherent approach between beam-physics requirements, magnet design and magnetic measurements, in particular for the high-luminosity LHC upgrade. Eventually, participate in the re-commissioning of the LHC machine after the upgrade.
    • Oversee and manage the projects under the team's remit, proactively and reactively managing project risks.
    • Specify test procedures and optimize resources, according to beam physics needs and machine schedules.
    • Train and supervise students, technicians and staff members.
    • Organise and chair meetings and reviews and participate in the communication of results.
    • Provide timely feedback on progress, monitoring and solving issues as they arise.

As a hands-on electrical engineer or applied physicist: you will take a central role in the conception and metrological characterization of next-generation, world-class sensors and instruments needed to qualify magnetic components and devices. You will:

    • Design, implement, characterise and document software, hardware and firmware components including the existing C++ measurement software, configuration and result databases, customized integrators, amplifiers and controllers based on state-of-the-art technology.
    • Develop, procure, characterize and document magnetic sensors, components and systems such as stretched wires, linear and rotational stages, electronic instruments and work on the integration, commissioning, and metrological characterization of complete test benches.
    • Work on establishing an integrated approach for the metrological certification of magnetic measurements, including the development of metrological standards and traceability procedures.
    • Work on concepts for magnetic measurements and their analysis in view of requirements from beam-physics, accelerator control, magnet design, and magnet production follow up.
    • Take charge of the activities related to the maintenance and calibration of the vast instrument park available to the team.
    • Participate in the development of the magnetic field models for the various CERN accelerators.

    Qualification required

Master's degree in the field of electrical or electronic engineering, or applied physics, or equivalent.

A Ph.D. in electrical engineering would be an advantage.
