Function details:
The IP and Science Policy Advisor will be responsible to keep the research team aware of activities concerning intellectual property (new patent filings, patents granted), relevant to current or potential research or product development projects within the company or where they have an involvement. As agreed with colleague scientists within the company, he/she
will be responsible for helping the company’s research teams identifying new contacts and research opportunities with external laboratories/institutes/third parties to set up collaborations or partnerships that can contribute to the company’s interest and strategy. To improve the external profile and influence of the company in the relevant research sector, and as agreed with the company’s R&D management, he/she will be a key point of contact with external science funding agencies and a number of wider industry/research lobby and policy-making groups.
Expectations for this role include:
• Maintain good awareness of goals and current project proceedings to be able to identify appropriate external collaborations and establish partnerships, as agreed with project teams.
• Organize and process IP searches and disseminate the proper information to the relevant person(s) and project teams. Follow up to make sure that opportunities are not missed or threats are identified.
• Ensure that the company is fully aware of relevant IP activities from competitors and potential collaborators. Obtain advices and opinions from external attorney firms on IP matters.
• Coordinate the application and new patent filing process. Follow up ongoing IP submissions in close interaction with IP attorney firms and experts. Take all necessary initiatives to support this process in close consultation with the responsible project team.
• Explore and evaluate potential external contacts in the relevant areas following the company’s needs and priorities and in agreement with relevant project teams.
• Explore opportunities for external funding for priority areas and projects, where appropriate.
• Contribute to (contract) negotiations to set up research collaborations.
• Maintain and initiate contacts with relevant external groups/institutes/bodies, and participate to provide input into research community strategy development

Education and qualifications:
• PhD in Plant Breeding, Genetics, Biotechnology, or Bioengineer with relevant experience in a related area, to be able to provide credibility in making external and internal contacts.
• Excellent scientist with 4 to 6 years of relevant experience in scientific projects.
• Experience with applications for funding to external bodies.
• Analytical mind with excellent writing skills to summarize scientific proposals and progress in projects.
Personality and mentality:
• Good negotiator skills, motivated to develop scientific contacts with universities, biotech companies and juridical organizations.
• Self-confident and excellent communicator.
• Proven coordination and leadership skills.
