An exciting opportunity to grow within a leading-edge research and technology operation
AkzoNobel Industrial Chemicals is at the leading edge of applied research and technology for monochloroacetic acid (MCA). Could you help us to record and maximize our activities in this area? Do you have the potential to absorb our growing MCA knowledge and move on to the next level in our organization? If so, you could be the ideal person for a fascinating role that forms a vital bridge between RD&I and our production sites.
AkzoNobel is a leading global paints and coatings company and a major producer of specialty chemicals. Calling on centuries of expertise, we supply industries and consumers worldwide with innovative products and sustainable technologies designed to meet the growing demands of our fast-changing planet.
AkzoNobel Industrial Chemicals (ANIC) is a major producer of vacuum salt and a leading producer of chlor-alkali products, caustic lye and derivatives like monochloroacetic acid (MCA). As such, ANIC is essential to the chemical, detergent, construction, food, pulp and paper, and plastics industries.
The MCA business is the world’s largest producer of monochloroacetic acid (MCA) and sodium monochloroacetate (SMCA). We operate two production sites in Europe and Asia and a dissolving station in the USA, enabling us to serve customers globally. Safety and responsibility are top priorities as we aim to guarantee the lowest possible risks for our customers, our logistical partners and our employees.
MCA operates its own dedicated RD&I Group (IC-MPT) in Deventer, the Netherlands. IC-MPT executes technology driven projects to improve our current MCA processes and develops new technologies for existing or new MCA plants. The Group consists of three people in the lab, two project leaders and a manager.
In order to help us capture and retain the knowledge gained from its projects, IC-MPT currently seeks a highly conscientious and ambitious
Development Engineer
Your core purpose in this role is to ensure a comprehensive MCA Reference Book so that knowledge is accessible for everyone who may be involved now or in the future.
After two years you can expect to grow into a project leadership role within RD&I or move to a production site as a Process Engineer. As such, this is an ideal starting position that will give you in-depth knowledge of all MCA processes so that you become a valuable asset to our organization.
You will join a multinational and multicultural company that is committed to your personal and professional development.
The position is based in Deventer, the Netherlands. However, approximately 30% of your time will be spent on-site in Delfzijl and in the second year you will spend approximately 10% of your time in China.
Key responsibilities and deliverables
Within this context you describe the processes that were followed, or should be followed, for MCA RD&I projects at a chemical level and, in regard to production, at a technological level. In doing so you focus on the critical subjects and identify the reasons for success and failure.
It is essential that the Reference Book is updated when any new information presents itself, e.g. after a problem has been solved, or when new insights or developments arise. Thus it is imperative that you motivate all those involved in MCA RD&I and technology to keep you instantly informed of all developments.
Based on the knowledge you gather, you help to facilitate knowledge and best-practices exchange between MCA plants and RD&I. You also contribute to studies and projects for the optimization and improvement of plant performance, and implement the next steps for the Reference Book project.
To apply for this position, you must possess the following attributes:
• University Degree/Masters or PhD in a subject such as Chemical Engineering;
• You are searching for a first role, or you are someone with a few years of experience in a relevant role;
• A high degree of integrity;
• Team player with excellent communication skills, who can also work independently;
• Able to form a ‘helicopter view’ by looking at the whole picture and not getting lost in details;
• A high standard of written and spoken English, with Dutch an asset.
