Packaging Engineer Job Description
Packaging Engineer/s Programme Timing Responsibilities:
Complete 18 months before Job#1.
- Liaise with FMC PD and MP&L personnel to locate an up-to-date Bill-of-Material (BOM).
- Review all engine components and to develop provisional packaging specifications based upon previous FMC experience within PTO and historical packaging specifications where available. Fully investigate all components and their special needs/requirements via sample components if not available then download CAD data from the FMC Team Centre system.
- Load all provisional packaging specifications EU-1121/1271s to GPP/Packman and (Ford global packaging data systems) and Plan For Every Part (PFEP) to support early freight calculations and all PTO programme planning.
- Develop and issue FMC standard packaging programme metrics to FMC management to support PBR programme reviews.
- Provide and support Ford material handling engineers with all data regarding the packaging specifications of all engine components in the engine.
Complete 12 months before Job#1 - Liaise with FMC Product Development and MP&L personnel to review ongoing changes to BOM.
- Review all engine component specifications EU- 1121 /1271s with MP&L, MHE ,ME and DEP plant personnel to develop best practice 'right sized' Packaging Specification based on physical trials using all prototype engine parts.
- Ensure that all updates to packaging specifications EU- 1121 /1271s are re-loaded into GPP/Packman together with all visual aids; also re-load all data to PFEP and CMMS systems to support 'downstream' activities.
- Continually update and issue packaging programme metrics to all parties on a monthly basis to support all PBR programme reviews.
- Provide support to FMC Material Handling Engineering (MHE) with regards to the packaging of all components packaging 'special packaging' and standard packaging changes and updates.
- Develop packaging for all in-house machined parts (3C's) in conjunction with the 'Rapid Prototype workshop' based in Dunton or nominated packaging suppliers for the programme.
- When prototype packaging has been provisionally agreed with DEP and Manufacturing Engineering (ME) ensure this is provided in sufficient quantities to meet tool try-out requirements and PTR runs in the FMC manufacturing plant.
Complete 9 months before Job#1 - Continue to liaise with FMC Product Development (PD) and Material Planning & Logistics (MP&L) personnel to review ongoing changes to BOM.
- All suppliers have been contacted and a preliminary agreement reached on the Packaging Specification EU- 1121 /1271 for each component.
- All packaging data is loaded to FMC CMMS system as "C" = Confirmed status to support launch.
- All packaging specifications have been loaded to CMMS as "C" status (confirmed by all areas) in sufficient time to meet the requirements of all components scheduled by Supply Chain Management (SCM) for the PSW MRD dates.
Complete 6 months before Job#1 - Continue to liaise with FMC and MP&L personnel to review ongoing changes to Bill-of-Material (BOM).
- A complete review will have begun of tool try-out packaging to ensure compliance to Ford standards and approved specifications.
- Complete at PSW
- All packaging will have been agreed and purchased in sufficient quantities to support PSW build requirements.
- A complete review will have begun of PSW packaging to ensure compliance to Ford standards and approved specifications.
- A Concern & Corrective Action Report (CCAR) will have been raised and jointly kept up to date with plant personnel to track packaging issues.
- CCAR will be made available as required for Ford management reviews.
Complete pre Job#1 - All packaging specifications will have been agreed and all packaging purchased in sufficient quantities to support full programme capacity or rate of climb (ROC).
- A complete review of PSW packaging to ensure compliance to Ford standards and plant approved specifications all photos and data recorded and updated and loaded into GPP/Packman/PFEP/CMMS FMC packaging systems.
- A CCAR will have been used to track and close all packaging issues identified during PSW, PTR training build phases.
Complete at Job#1 - Any packaging issues 100% closed and all packaging and specifications are in place for all engine components and all data 100% loaded to CMMS and all FMC systems.
- Programme closure and completion by the purchased service packaging engineer/s :
- Be the single point of contact for all Panther suppliers and FMC teams to assist in developing the appropriate Packaging Specification and answering any packaging related questions that are raised throughout the complete programme.
- Support management reviews, supplier conferences with presentations of programme packaging data.
- Provide all packaging data in support of freight costing reviews and to assist FMC global logistics and FMC Purchasing teams in any sourcing comparisons.
- Produce and update packaging metrics sheet and PBR sheet on a regular basis for all management reviews as required.
Skills: - A minimum of 5 years’ experience in FMC automotive and packaging related industry.
- Fully conversant with all Ford systems e.g. CMMS3, GPP, Packman, PFEP, Pack Assist, Team Centre/Vis Mock Up, Global 8D, Integrator, GPDS, AIMs, E-Tracker, Share-Point.
- Fully experienced in Safety e.g. Trained to FMC Gensafe10 safety standards.
- Experienced with 6 Sigma practices and attended Consumer Driven Green belt training.
- Experienced automotive engineer/s with extensive knowledge of all Ford packaging standards within the EU-1750, more specifically, those relating to Powertrain Operations.
- Flexibility & willingness to lead change and implement best practice from lessons learned on previous programme and be able to influence change when required in the production plant environment.
- Good working knowledge of Windows 7 based applications and Office 2010 – primarily Outlook, Excel, Word, Access, Power Point, Office Picture Manager, etc.
- Good communication skills with all FMC teams regarding all programme planning activities on a daily basis.
- Must be able to work effectively, with limited supervision, using own initiative / packaging knowledge and experience.
- High level of decision-making responsibility
- Must have experience of when and how to escalate problems/issues in order that solutions are found in a timely manner to support and deliver the programme to the Key milestone dates without any risks to the programme launch.
- Physical/Environmental Working Conditions
- Flexible approach to working hours is essential due to the amount of travel involved and also Production Assembly plants shift working patterns this is an important requirement of the position.
