Elsevier, the world-leading publisher of scientific, technical and medical information products and services, is seeking a Journal Publisher for the respected and prestigious journals and conference program in 'Pharmacology and Pharmaceutical Sciences'. This is an outstanding opportunity for a talented, enthusiastic individual to play a prominent role in the management and development of leading edge content and services for a dynamic market area. As a journal publisher you will be responsible for managing the growth of a portfolio of journals, responding to new opportunities and needs within the commercial and strategic objectives determined by the overall business. The successful candidate will be an energetic and effective relationship builder, organized, results-oriented, and able to act independently as well as part of a team. Key Result Areas Portfolio management and development:
- Contribute to the development of strategy and implementation plans for the specialty.
- Work with editors, authors, editorial boards and scientific congresses to ensure sufficient copy flow of relevant manuscripts to the product portfolio within the context of content growth / quality strategy.
- Negotiate and manage contractual relationships with journal editors and societies
- Manage and take responsibility for the day-to-day publishing operations that maintain and develop the existing portfolio, e.g. cost control, publication to page budget, publication schedule, fulfillment.
- Ensure that both product-related results (invoiced and realised turnover, non-subscription sales, etc) and market related achievements (page growth, market share, citation indices, online usage, author/editor/reviewer feedback etc) meet budgets and agreed targets
- Provide input to the annual pricing/budgeting process for the portfolio when required.
- Input to marketing plans for the assigned product portfolio
New business development: - Identify new market needs and business opportunities.
- Based on market requirements and in line with strategy, initiate, propose and develop new products and services, pursue acquisitions of journals (society and proprietary) or other relevant products/services, for new profitable business.
- Ensure that market-related achievements meet or exceed plans and targets: acquisitions of society and proprietary journals, start-ups of new journals, development of other new products and services.
Relationship management: - Establish, manage and maintain excellent contacts and networks with key external stakeholders in the relevant specialty, especially with journal editors and society representatives, with a view to 1) understanding their professional and organizational needs; and 2) ongoing development of journals and other products or services, and/or acquisitions of society and proprietary journals.
- Establish, manage and maintain excellent contacts with key stakeholders within the business; coordinate their activities as they relate to journal needs.
Leadership: - Aligning performance for success – setting goals and development plans, monitor progress, developing staff and coaching for best performance

Qualifications Required Education and Experience:
- Masters degree or PhD.
- Experience of scientific / medical publishing, including working with professional associations, with ability to manage and grow a journals publishing program (8+ journals), acquire and start new products or services including society-owned journals, research and develop new business opportunities.
General Knowledge and Technical Skills: - Good knowledge of the pharmacy/pharmacology field
and/or - Good knowledge of the publishing process and related developments
- Financial planning and analysis, commercial awareness, business management skills.
- Scanning the horizon for latest developments, eg new technologies, business models etc
- Project Management as in managing the very diverse range of contacts and deliverables
