(Diana, Technisch Projectmanager @ Flanders Make sinds 2019)

About Flanders Make
Towards a digitally transformed, sustainable and competitive industry
Flanders Make is a fast-growing research centre that performs research to support companies from various sectors in their sustainable innovation processes. From our establishments in Lommel, Leuven, Kortrijk and Sint-Truiden and labs within the 5 Flemish universities, we stimulate open innovation through excellent research.
Because of our unique position as a bridge between industry and research, our teams combine application and system proficiency with technological and scientific knowledge. Academic partners and more than 150 companies are part of the innovative circular ecosystem of Flanders Make.
Our strategy based on industrial needs and long-term trends ensures a close link with the industry and its challenges. With our programmed research, we create impact in companies.
Sustainability, climate and workability have a high priority in our research. We want to help companies in developing sustainable, green, smart and connected products and production systems, with a special focus on people and their interaction with machines.
Testimonials
“In research, you have the time and the opportunity to let your project team play with their ideas. Together you can search for what might work. I used to work as a technical expert, but then you go deeper and deeper into the content. Now, as a technical project manager, I am busy with several things at the same time. That variety is refreshing, I really like that.” (Diana, Technical project manager since 2019 @ Flanders Make)

Our infrastructure
Our labs feature many new prototype machines and new ones are being built every month. We use them to demonstrate the technology of the future to companies.

Flanders Make is working on breakthrough technologies for manufacturing companies to make their machines and vehicles more autonomous and (energy-) efficient. Additional sensors can provide data to predict current and future needs in terms of operational optimisation and condition-based maintenance. In the factory of the future, we could also use additional sensor data to enable a non-destructive product quality assessment.
Research topics include: virtual sensing, sensor fusion, anomaly detection, fault diagnostics and lifetime prognostics.
“I don’t think you can find such a varied job elsewhere”, says Rob, sensing & monitoring research engineer at Flanders Make. “The core purpose of research is to learn new things.”
Function
As a young potential or an experienced sensing & monitoring research engineer, you will:
- Work on a variety of industrial challenges (large and small industrial machines, vehicles and production systems);
- Be part of a research team with combined expertise in sensors, data acquisition & advanced signal processing, feature extraction & physical modelling, experimental testing, artificial intelligence including machine learning & deep learning algorithms, physics-informed AI or hybrid modelling, model-based data analytics; and the implementation of edge-cloud algorithms;
- Play a key role in making the newest sensing and monitoring techniques relevant for anomaly detection, fault diagnostics and lifetime prognostics in the industry, making them more robust, more adaptive and more intelligent in complex multi-sensor settings.
More concretely, you will for multiple industrial cases:
- Look for solutions to improve operational monitoring or condition monitoring of machines and vehicles as well as quality monitoring of products, taking into account industrial requirements such as robustness, adaptiveness or total cost of ownership;
- Develop sensor models and sensor fusion algorithms or explore, test and evaluate virtual sensing methods;
- Enhance algorithms for intelligent anomaly detection, fault diagnostics and lifetime prognostics;
- Work in close collaboration with experts from our industrial partners and have regular contacts with experts from knowledge centres in Belgium and abroad;
- Become a sparring partner for our leading companies in their innovation processes;
- Trace and present industrial challenges and new research opportunities.
- Participate in multiple projects with various applications. You will be able to choose from a variety of technology development projects to apply and broaden your skills in different domains.
Profile
You have:
− A master's or PhD degree in Engineering (e.g. Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, Computer Science…);
− A creative mind and are eager to look for new solutions and discover new grounds;
− Basic knowledge of data acquisition strategies and signal processing algorithms;
− Some experience with machine or industrial applications in an industrial or research environment;
− Reliable expertise in modelling the behaviour of dynamic systems, combined with basic experience with machine learning algorithms and/or deep learning algorithms;
− Some affinity with sensors, model development and/or physics-informed artificial intelligence, and/or model-based data analytics and/or edge-cloud implementation is a very big plus;
