ASML is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of chip-making equipment.
Our vision is to enable affordable microelectronics that improve the quality of life. To achieve this, our mission is to invent, develop, manufacture and service advanced technology for high-tech lithography, metrology and software solutions for the semiconductor industry.
ASML's guiding principle is continuing Moore's Law towards ever smaller, cheaper, more powerful and energy-efficient semiconductors. This results in increasingly powerful and capable electronics that enable the world to progress within a multitude of fields, including healthcare, technology, communications, energy, mobility, and entertainment.
Working at ASML
We provide the world’s top chipmakers everything they need to create better performing, cheaper semiconductor chips. Simply put: we are an industry leader supporting industry leaders.
As such, you’ll be encouraged to bring your best ideas and act on them. You’ll have the freedom, trust, and support in your field to experiment and solve complex challenges. Things are rarely dull when you’re constantly breaking new ground.
But despite our fast-paced environment at the forefront of tech, we take your work-life balance and wellbeing seriously. A business is only as good as its employees.
So join us, and you’ll be a part of a global collaboration. One that promotes creativity, the inclusion of highly diverse teams, and an exciting and dynamic work environment. Join us, and you’ll be a part of progress.
Our departments
Optics is at the heart of everything we do at ASML. We have multiple opportunities for design engineers with an optical background. Within optics there are multiple specializations or departments that you could be selected for:
Research: Research department is responsible for bringingcreative ideas / concepts to technical solutions, ready for product development, enabling extension of Moore’s law and driving ASML’s long-term growth in semiconductor industry .
The Optical groups are responsible for all new optical sensor concepts, new designs and optical (measurement) systems that will become future ASML products.
EUV: The optical column is the heart of the EUV system, a technological miracle. Optical column comprises of many optical modules which are needed to guide the light to print the right image at the wafer which results into a chip. The department DE EUV Optical Column is responsible for delivery of the projection, illumination, dose control, and EUV light collection functions for the EUV machines. The department develops technical solutions, means and methods and competences to ensure these deliveries in all the different product phases.
Sensors / light department: Within the BM Sensors department, the Light Sources and Image Sensors group’s mission is to deliver high quality light and sensors. The group is responsible for the physical and optical design of these light sources and sensors for EUV and DUV machines.
Introduction to the job

Are you eager to shape the future of ASML and create innovative new ideas? Would you like to work together in multi-disciplinary teams to improve our products and to enable our clients to create the world’s most advanced chips? Then we might have multiple positions that might be interesting for you!
We are currentlylooking for multiple Design Engineers with an optical engineering background for our R&D department at ASML!
Your application can be discussed with multiple hiring managers from different groups.
When we think there could be a potential match.
Role and responsibilities
ASML builds lithography systems that can place multiple layers on a chip with very high precision.
You will contribute to the development of leading edge light sources for optical systems and more by designing, creating, integrating and testing within the restrictions imposed by system specifications and planning considerations, enabling Moore’s Law.
Optical Sensing
As Design Engineer in our Sensors department you will be a key player in a multidisciplinary environment that further develops the current and next generation optical image and level sensors. You will need to demonstrate your skills and knowledge in several of the following activities: Analysis, Modelling, optical sensors systems, specification definitions, optical solutions, sensor performance, opto-mechanical tooling, integration, calibration, test, experimental verification and supporting production. Keywords: Zemax, high-power laser optics / controls or image processing, sensors, MATLAB, Simulink.
Research Scientist
As Researcher you will be responsibleto execute high-level researchon different challenging topics the company is facing.
The job will consist in generatingnew ideas and solutions for current and future ASML products and performingsimulations and/or setup experiments to test new technologies and analyze data.
You will need to demonstrate your skills and knowledge in several of the following activities: Your initial responsibilities will be adapted to your experience level.
What are we looking for?
referably 5 years of research experience, excellent communication & collaboration skills, great at novel and inventive approaches, stakeholder management.
Metrology Design
The mission for the Metrology Design Engineer is to design and industrialize the next generation of measurement, controls and corrections. Increased optical power and better, more stable performance is a constant demand for our systems.
This requires mastering the full chain from requirement specification, (model based) design, and integration into the Source Laser platforms. It is the task of the design engineer to develop new solutions or improve existing ones, and present those to the relevant stakeholders and Apply broad knowledge in optics, sensors, actuators, image processing as well as in modeling and data analysis.
In which role would you like to develop yourself?
Education and experience
Technical University, MSc or PhD in physics or engineering with a strong focus on optics.
Multiple years of industry experience in an optics field can be a big plus!
