Global Regulatory Affairs Specialist Job Description

This position is part of the Global Product Stewardship organization (30 employees) and reports to the Senior Manager of the Regulatory Affairs department, which consists of a team of 13 professionals. The Product Stewardship organization has employees located in all regions of the world. The organizational mission of the Product Stewardship program is to ensure compliance with all applicable chemical control regulations and to minimize the potential impact of products and processes on people and the environment from early development throughout the product's life cycle.
Product Stewardship within SABIC is an integral part of the Corporate Sustainability Department, embedded in Corporate Technology & Innovation.
Job Purpose & Responsibilities
The Regulatory Affairs Specialist is the interface of Product Stewardship to the regulators of global chemicals policies and to the SABIC business functions.
The specialist is responsible for the following tasks:
- Implementation of regional and global regulatory programs such as new chemical policies (e.g. Turkey REACH)
- Monitor all relevant laws, regulations and industry standards in the field of product compliance such as chemicals inventories, food, drinking water, toys, medical/healthcare, E&E, building/construction, and automotive. Proactively inform the SBUs on the impact (short term/long term) of these regulations and standards on their products and business, and advise them of the necessary actions needed to address potential business threats or opportunities
- Participate in global chemical advocacy efforts for key raw materials and products through industry organizations. Develop plans in concert with these organizations to prevent unfair regulations or trade practices, to secure continuity of supply, and license-to-sell/manufacture
- Manage and coordinate external product certifications/notifications/registrations to support existing business and to secure business growth
- Monitor, evaluate, and approve new raw material and product formulations and recipe changes for the assigned SBUs globally
- Review of innovation projects to early identify product safety & compliance risk
- Provide support for import/export compliance needs and processes
- Define acceptance/rejection criteria and/or risk measures for products to be used in critical applications
- Management of assigned Product Stewardship Incidents
- Development of Corporate EHSS Standards (SHEMS) and generation of SOPs (standard operating procedures) for the Product Stewardship function
- Support the execution of internal and external audits
- Formulation and execution of strategic programs that will improve the overall product stewardship maturity within SABIC
- Specialist is expected to be self-propelling and work independently on certain assignments
- In other assignments specialist will work in multifunctional global teams, either as project leader or as subject matter expert
- Specialist is active in operational, tactical and strategic initiatives across SABIC
- Specialist can count on support and guidance of the broader Product Stewardship organization
- Many job responsibilities will have a regional impact, but global focus and initiatives are highly encouraged
- Most value is created by maintaining a strong global virtual network, within Product Stewardship and also with business and other functions
Global Regulatory Affairs Specialist Job Requirements
Requirements
- B.S. (M.S. or Ph.D. Degree preferred) in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biology, Polymer Science, or related discipline
- Over 5 years working experience in the Chemical or Petro industry with strong knowledge of chemical regulations, sustainability, EHSS, and product compliance standards
- Relevant IT system usage experience, e.g. SAP
- Strong SABIC business acumen
- Internal or external auditing experience
- Well-developed English language skill, both written and spoken, Dutch is a plus, but not a requirement
- Familiarity with global chemical control regulations such REACH, CLP, TSCA, GHS, CEPA …
- Good understanding of new chemical policies and evolving market needs
- Strong communication and organizational skills
