Background information
The Observation Based Research (OBR) group carries out ground based and airborne meteorological research to improve model parameterisations and satellite applications, as well as provide some commercial and defence work. The research aircraft (BAe 146-301) is based at Cranfield and run by the Facility for Airborne Atmospheric Measurements. FAAM is a joint Met Office and NERC facility and provides a core of instrumentation on the aircraft to which the Met Office and NERC add their own specialist instruments for flying campaigns. OBR also have a Cessna 421 based at Bournemouth for monitoring civil contingency events such as measurements of volcanic ash plumes.
The aircraft instruments are research grade and require specialists to obtain the best quality information out of them. The ideal candidate for this position would have a strong theoretical and instrumentation background and a keen interest in conducting atmospheric radiation research. OBR has developed a fourier transform thermal IR interferometer and a suite of microwave radiometers for understanding the distribution of hydrometeors, temperature and trace gases in the atmosphere. The successful candidate, depending on their area of expertise, would use data from these instruments to develop our understanding of the radiation balance of the planet and how these measurements can be used to remotely sense the Earth's atmosphere and surface. They would also participate in the development, maintenance and support of key instrument systems both current and future capabilities. The successful candidate would fly as a mission scientist and instrument operator on the FAAM BAe146 and, in time, take the lead in setting up and conducting field campaigns to further their own research projects.
