Background
Copernicus is the European Union's Earth observation programme, coordinated and managed by the European Commission in partnership with the European Space Agency (ESA) and EUMETSAT. Its current and future missions are tasked with delivering high quality, wide range Earth observation services providing information to, among other things, improve the management of the environment, understand and mitigate the effects of climate change, and ensure civil security.
The System Operations Engineer supports the operations of EUMETSAT’s Copernicus space and ground segment systems. The initial focus is system operations engineering for the Copernicus Sentinel-3 (S-3) ground segment and systems, including the operations preparations for the recurrent spacecraft (S-3C & S-3D). The position will also provide system operations engineering support to other Copernicus missions.
Duties
· System operations engineering and coordination of the operations of the S-3 spacecraft and ground segments, covering the Flight Operations Segment (FOS), Payload Data Ground Segment (PDGS) and Multi-Mission Elements (MMEs);
· Coordination and execution of the Operations Preparations activities for the S-3C and S-3D Satellites and evolutions of the S-3 ground segment;
· Support to the end-to-end service monitoring and reporting for S-3;
· Coordination of S-3 ground operations with external entities, including ESA and CNES, in relation to the interfaces and associated documentation;
· Contribution to the definition of the system operations concepts (including satellite and ground segment) for the future EUMETSAT Copernicus programmes;
· Participate in anomaly analyses, engineering change requests, and investigations relating to system operations;
· Support the Copernicus Operations Team Leader as back-up for management and coordination activities.

· University degree or equivalent in an engineering or scientifically relevant discipline, e.g. Mathematics, Physics, Remote Sensing, Telecommunications, Software or System Engineering.
Skills and Experience
· Proven experience in developing, testing and/or operating real-time space or ground segment systems;
· Experience of real-time ground segment systems monitoring;
· Thorough understanding of geographically distributed systems operations, including networking, distributed applications, and interactions with external operations entities;
· Knowledge of Earth Observation data processing systems;
· Experience of project / technical management;
· Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a proven ability to apply these to interactions within a team and between internal teams and external entities;
· Some experience on projects with international cooperation will be a distinct advantage.
