In this role you are responsible to find the best combination of materials to protect the solar cells on our first groundbreaking vehicle; Lightyear One. This all with the aim to have a lightweight but sturdy solar panel. One crucial aspect is the adhesion among all the layers that encapsulate the solar panels. You are involved from Research & Development to concrete application and your goal is to boost the TRL (Technology Readiness Level) from 3 to TRL 6. You will focus on;
- Process and material research
- Preliminary reliability work included mainly to help validating material / processing solution
- Bill of materials
- Cell technology
- Interconnection
- Encapsulant
- Front-sheet
- Back-sheet
- Support structure
- Sealing
- Outline process parameters
- Ensure proper adhesion between layers
- Exploring the possibilities of different materials
- Prototyping
- DoE (design of experiments)
- Ensuring compliance with relevant safety standards

Material Engineer Job Requirements
What are we looking for?
- A Bachelor or Master degree in Chemical / Mechanical / Material / Composite / Structural Engineering or similar
- At least 3 years of fulltime experience in a relevant direction
- You have relevant practical skills with the portfolio to show for it
- Extensive experience with material properties is a must
- Experience with composite materials is a must
- Experience in automotive is a big plus
- You are proactive and a real self starter with willingness to learn
- Availability for 40 hours a week
- Extremely fluent in English in word and oral. Dutch is preferred
