The Brightlands Materials Center (BMC) in Geleen, a cooperation of the Province of Limburg and TNO established in March 2015, performs programmatic industrial application driven research in the field of polymeric materials that will provide solutions for the societal challenges of tomorrow. It’s meeting place is the Brightlands Chemelot Campus, with a global network of leading companies along the value chain and renowned universities and institutes. The research laboratory facilities at the Brightlands Chemelot Campus in Geleen are strongly growing, as well as the group of involved researchers that work together with a variety of industrial partners and actors from the knowledge infrastructure, including other research organizations and universities. The work is typically contained in multi-year and multi-client research and technological development projects, including those within the context of the European Framework Programs.
The TNO Materials Solutions department is the linking pin between the Brightlands Materials Center and the TNO organization, and employs the majority of the professional research staff. The department has a strong track record in the development of innovative nanomaterials, nanostructured coatings and polymer nanocomposites.
Currently there is an opening in the field of thermoplastic polymer and composite materials. For this vacancy, the working location will primarily be on the Brightlands Chemelot Campus in Geleen.
Job description:
As Scientist Polymer Material Technology you are responsible for advanced research in the field of process and material development of thermoplastic polymeric materials. This will in particular be for inhomogeneous materials, reinforced with long or endless fibers (advanced composites). You will contribute to the success of the Brightlands Materials Centre in Geleen by defining opportunities, analyzing them, and by developing and/or proposing the most efficient methods to come to new materials technologies. You will analyze application needs and challenges identified by the industry, and translate these into defined research topics.
In the Lightweight Automotive program, you will be involved in research projects in the field of thermoplastic polymer and composite materials, in particular their processing and relation with their structural material behavior. You will use your initiative and knowledge to drive cross-fertilization in the different technologies developed at BMC. You will perform research activities supporting the program, and cooperate with PhD, MSc and BSc students working at the BMC premises or at connected universities.
Typical work activities and responsibilities are:
• Participating in research projects in the field of polymer processing and material development for lightweight automotive (composition, processing, and characterization);
• Developing new consortia / projects in your field of expertise (project acquisition);
• Publishing and presenting your work, both internally and externally;
• Execution and quality of research projects, and communication with customers / partners on scientific progress and project results;
• Identifying gaps in knowledge and expertise needed to support the research program;
• Developing a maintaining a network with academic and industrial partners.
Job requirements:
You preferably have a PhD degree in mechanical engineering or polymer materials, and you have expertise in polymer melt processing, development and characterization of (reinforced) polymer materials (e.g. thermal & mechanical properties).
• A background in polymeric materials science, preferably in the interaction of processing, composition and mechanical properties of fiber reinforced thermoplastics;
• Knowledge and experience with material development and characterization;
• Experience in the field of physical recycling of thermoplastic polymers and composites is an advantage;
• Project management experience.
• Strong interpersonal skills & ability to work effectively as a member of domestic and international teams.
