Introduction
This is an internship for a master's student in Mechanical engineering, Dynamics and Control or Applied Physics who is interested in developing a methodology that can be used to process Seismic Simulation Results.
Job Mission
The main challenge of ASML is to make it possible to produce smaller chips that are more sustainable and powerful, while processing more information. To establish this, ASML machines should continuously be improved on positioning requirements of mechanical devices and machine throughput.
This is the responsibility of the Mechanical Analysis department (part of Research & Development). Within this department, a group of 40 engineers is responsible for executing mechanical analysis such as the dynamic behavior of machine-parts and (sub)systems.
Job Description
By the usage of FEM models and model reduction techniques a complete ASML machine is modeled such that a transient Seismic disturbance can be applied to it.
A lot of data in the form of time domain signals is generated from such a Seismic Simulation which takes considerable work to post-process and present because of the complex nature of ASML machines and the transient nature of the Seismic disturbance.
A framework needs to be put in place to organize and interpret this data in a meaningful way in both time and frequency domain. Basic signal processing techniques like detrending/filtering need to be applied to clean up the signals. However this can be tricky because if designed too aggressive useful data can be lost.
The main scope of work is to develop a methodology to represent the data at an ASML module level through the use of custom MATLAB tools such that a quick overview of the data can be obtained and a meaningful interpretation towards judging the impact of the seismic event can be made.
Education
You are a master’s student within the field of Mechanical Engineering, Dynamics/Control or Applied Physics. Your communication skills are excellent and you have a hands-on attitude. Furthermore, you are proactive and you have good knowledge of English, both verbal and in writing. Experience with MATLAB/Simulink is highly desired.
The minimum duration for the internship is 3 months for 5 days a week. The start date is as soon as possible.
Please keep in mind that we can only consider students (who are enrolled at a school during the whole internship period) for our internships and graduation assignments.

What ASML offers
Your internship will be in one of the leading Dutch corporations, gaining valuable experience in a highly dynamic environment. You will receive a monthly internship allowance of 500 euro (maximum), plus a possible housing or travel allowance. In addition, you’ll get expert, practical guidance and the chance to work in and experience a dynamic, innovative team environment.
ASML: Be part of progress
We make machines that make chips – the hearts of the devices that keep us informed, entertained and safe; that improve our quality of life and help to tackle the world’s toughest problems.
We build some of the most amazing machines that you will ever see, and the software to run them. Never satisfied, we measure our performance in units that begin with Pico or Nano.
We believe we can always do better. We believe the winning idea can from anyone. We love what they do – not because it’s easy, but because it’s hard.
Students: Getting ready for real-world R&D
Pushing technology further is teamwork, and our R&D team is more than 5,500 people strong, with major sites on three continents. Dozens of diverse, interdisciplinary teams work in parallel to meet a challenging development schedule.
In such an environment, your colleagues may be sitting next door, or they could be thousands of kilometers away in a different country, or even working for a different company.
An internship at ASML is your opportunity to get to know this world of industrial-strength R&D and get a feel for that excites you most. Will you design a part of the machine, or make sure it gets built to the tightest possible specifications? Will you write software that drives the system to its best performance, or work side-by-side with the engineers of our customers in a fab, optimizing a system to the requirements of the customer?
How will you be part of progress?
