The Federal Office for the Safety of Nuclear Waste Management ( BASE ) is the central specialist authority of the federal government for the safe handling of the remains of nuclear energy. As the federal government’s nuclear supervisory authority, we monitor and control the federal company for radioactive waste disposal (Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung mbH) and their nuclear and radiation protection projects and activities for the construction, operation and subsequent closure of the Morsleben repository for radioactive waste, the Konrad repository (currently under construction) and the Asse II mine. As an independent higher federal authority, BASE is part of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (Bundesministerium für Umwelt, Naturschutz und nukleare Sicherheit, BMU).
