Nikhef is the national institute for subatomic physics in the Netherlands. It is a collaboration between four Dutch universities and the funding agency FOM and offers a vibrant setting for cutting edge scientific research. Nikhef employs about 295 people, of whom about 195 physicists. The Nikhef laboratory provides excellent technical equipment and is staffed with 75 technicians and engineers. The institute coordinates and supports major activities in experimental subatomic physics in the Netherlands, such as the experiments at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Nikhef also participates in experiments in the research fields of gravitational waves, cosmic rays and astroparticle physics. Knowledge and technology transfer to third parties, i.e. industry, society and the general public, is an integral part of Nikhef’s mission. Nikhef has its own state-of-the-art data centre for internal as well as external customers.
